Comenius-EduMedia awarded since 1995 by the GPI

The Society for Pedagogy, Information and Media "Johann Amos Comenius", eV (GPI) was founded in 1964 with the aim of making the latest developments in the field of systematic, scientifically based teaching and learning methods known to a broad public and promoting their introduction in schools and training.

Today, the GPI is committed to promoting the development and testing of teaching and learning methods, including digital educational media.

Comenius EduMedia Medal, Seal and Thematic Awards

The Comenius EduMedia Medal is our highest award and stands for exemplary or outstanding quality of digital educational media.

The Comenius EduMedia seal stands for quality in digital education, which has been confirmed by scientifically developed evaluation criteria.

“In 2024 and 2025, a Comenius EduMedia Award for Sustainability (GreenUp) will be awarded for digital educational media.

Submissions to Comenius EduMedia Awards are assessed against quality criteria. The best rated ones are nominated for the Comenius EduMedia Medal.

A jury will select the winners of Comenius EduMedia medals from among the best-rated Comenius EduMedia seals.

SUSTAINABILITY

Comenius EduMedia Awards for Sustainability are given to digital educational media that address the topic of sustainability or promote sustainable development, that is, “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (UN World Commission on Environment and Development).

As part of an EU Erasmus+ project, the members of the Comenius jury evaluation criteria for sustainability which serve as the basis for the awarding of “sustainability awards”.

For the sustainability awards, only digital educational media who have been submitted for Comenius EduMedia Awards at the same time. The Comenius EduMedia submission is subject to payment, the Sustainability submission is free.

The significance of the award

Who was Johann Amos Comenius?

He is considered the father of modern education and the founder of modern pedagogy and didactics. With his progressive ideas he radically changed the school system and was involved in various European school reforms. His influence is still reflected in the education system today.

  1. father of modern education: Comenius is considered the father of modern education and the founder of contemporary pedagogy and didactics.
  2. Author of Didactic Magna: His book Didactic Magna (1630) is considered his most important pedagogical work. In it, he presented education as lifelong learning and systematized the school process for children and young people.
  3. influence on today's education: Many of his ideas still shape the school system today, for example the methodology of teaching material, the structure of lessons and the structure of the school year with holidays. He shaped concepts such as the class as a self-contained learning unit and laid the foundation for teacher training.
  4. Exile and Protestantism: As a Protestant, Comenius spent much of his life in exile, which greatly influenced his works and their content.
  5. Education for everyone: He campaigned for making education accessible to all - regardless of gender, social background or language. He called for schools in every community and textbooks in the mother tongue.
  6. Learning with Understanding: Comenius saw education as the greatest opportunity for personal development. He advocated gradual, lifelong learning with understanding instead of mere rote learning, which was common at the time.
  7. Faith in human goodness: Contrary to the belief of the time that man was inherently evil, he emphasized the inherent goodness of man. He rejected punishment and corporal punishment and called for a pleasant learning environment in which children learn out of thirst for knowledge, not fear of punishment.
  8. Pansophy: His didactic principles are based on pansophy – a comprehensive representation of all human knowledge. This concept was also the basis for his visionary textbooks.
  9. honors from universities: The oldest and largest university in Slovakia, the Comenius University in Bratislava, founded in 1919 (Univerzita Komenského v Bratislave), bears his name.
  10. First Picture Book for Children: Comenius introduced age-appropriate textbooks. In 1654 he published Orbis Pictus, which is considered the first picture book for children and represented a revolution in teaching materials.
